Wonders of the World Nominee: Timbuktu

Timbuktu was a trading post in what is now modern day Mali, Africa. It was the location of the famous University of Sankore, which is considered to be the first University in the world. It was located at the intersection of major trading routes in western Africa. Built in the 16th century, it was an intellectual and religious hub in the Muslim world. The photo on the right is the famous Sankore mosque.
