The Potala Palace is the former residence of the Dalai Lama. Located in Lhasa, Tibet, the palace was built around 1650 and is located on the sharply rising hill that rises over 800 feet from the valley floor below. The building was built like a citadel with several defensive measures in mind to help protect its important resident. The palace was abandoned by the Dalai Lama after an uprising in 1959. The Chinese have since converted the Potala Palace into a museum. |
