Wonders of the World Nominee: Pompeii

Pompeii was an ancient city in Italy that was engulfed in a catastrophic volcanic eruption by the nearby Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. Pompeii was completely buried by ash in a matter of a few hours and the actual location of the buried city was unknown up until the 18th century. Today, the site is massive with only a little over half of the site being excavated down to street level. Due to being buried in ash for so long, Pompeii is remarkably preserved with many frescoes, paintings, and murals in outstanding shape. Cavities found in the hardened ash were discovered to be the locations of human remains. Plaster was poured into these cavities and it has given us an eerie look on how Pomeiians died on that fateful day. Some of these plaster casts remain in the ruins and others have been moved to the Naples Museum.
