Petra is an ancient city located in Jordan. The buildings are famously cut out of the mountain walls. To date, nobody knows the purpose behind the site or when it may have been built. The site remained unknown to the world until it was rediscovered in 1812. The best known building is called The Treasury and it is shown in the picture on the right. Today, few people visit the site due to political instability in Jordan. The government of Jordan is planning on building a visitor center in hopes to promote more tourism to the site. |
