Chichen Itza is a pyramid complex on the Yucatan peninisula in Mexico which was built by the Mayan civilization. The most imposing building among the ruins is the 'El Castillo' or 'The Castle.' It was a step pyramid built sometime in around the 11th or 12 century and stands approximately 100 feet high. Chichen Itza was a major Mayan capitol and was believed to have been first inhabited around 650 AD. There are several prominant structures at Chichen Itza, but none more prominant than the 'El Castillo' pyramid. It is believed that Chichen Itza was already largely abandoned when the Spanish arrived in the 16th Century. There is no definitive reason on how the site lost its importance among the Mayan civilization. |
