The Banaue Rice Terraces are an ancient array of terraces in the Ifugao province in the Philippines. They were constructed nearly 2000 years ago by an ancient indigenous population using only their hands and some primitive tools. The Banaue Rice Terraces were designed and positioned to take advantage of the rain forest located above for irrigation. The terraces are a part of a larger collection of ancient terraces in the Philippines, but the Banaue Rice Terraces are by far the most comprehensive and in itself enormous, covering over 4000 square miles of mountainside (more than twice the size of Rhode Island). The terraces are still being farmed today, putting them at an increased risk of erosion and deterioration. |
