Wonders of the World Nominee: Bagan

Bagan is an ancient city in modern day Myanmar (Burma). The majority of the temples were built in the 11th to 13th centuries by the first Burmese Empire (formerly known as the Pagan Empire). The ruins of the city cover a massive area totaling 15 square miles. The kingdom has similar architechural styles as neighboring Angkor Wat in Cambodia, as both were Buddhist empires and both were built around the same time. Unfortunately, the modern day ruling Junta party in Burma is carelessly restoring the ruins by using modern day supplies to patch together temples and other ruins, thus making the restoration look unauthentic from the original designs.
