Mexico CityMexico City is the arrival point for most people on their way to Teotihuacan. Mexico City is enormous and its metropolitan area is one of the largest in the world. It was built upon a dry lake bed and is surrounded by tall mountains on three sides. The origins of Mexico City date back into the 14th century when it was the Aztec capitol of Tenochtitlan. The city was conquered by the Spanish in the 16th century and was the capitol of New Spain for the next 200 years, up until Mexico gained its independence in the 19th century. Today, Mexico City has the highest GDP and the lowest poverty rate in all of Mexico, and it is a modern city with all the modern conveniences of home.
Mexico City is a sprawling city, the best way to move around the city is by the Metro (Subway) system. The Metro system is one of the largest and most used in the world with 11 different lines. Trains run frequently, but are often overcrowded and uncomfortable, especially during rush hour times. Keep your belongings close to you, as the tight quarters can become a haven for pick-pocketers. Other public transportation options include the bus or taxi, but traffic in Mexico City can be at a standstill during the day and these options should generally be avoided if the Metro is available. |

Other 'Must Sees' in Mexico CityMexico City has more museums than any other city in the world, and it is not quantity over quality, as there are several good ones. The best one that we recommend is the National Museum of Anthropology in Chapultepec. It contains the largest collection of ancient Mexican artifacts, including many from Teotihuacan, and you could easily spend a whole day looking through the museum. Other recommended areas to visit are the Centro Historico area, which is the historic area of the city that includes several colonial landmarks and one of the largest squares in the world, the Plaza de la Constitucion. If you are looking to shop, the Santa Fe District is another nice area; it is the modern business area with a large shopping mall. |
