The Pyramids of GizaThe Pyramids of Giza complex consists of three large pyramids and several other smaller structures around the site. The three large pyramids are the Pyramid of Khufu (Also called the Great Pyramid), the Pyramid of Khafre, and the Pyramid of Menkaure. There are also some smaller 'Queen Pyramids' located throughout the site; you can see three of them in foreground in the photo to the left. The Sphinx is also located within the complex. Other ruins among the Pyramids of Giza include temples, tombs, cemeteries, quarries, and builder's quarters. |
| The most notable and probably famous pyramid on site is the Pyramid of Khufu, or more commonly called The Great Pyramid of Giza. This is the largest pyramid on site, both in terms of height and volume. The Great Pyramid towers at nearly 500 feet. The Pyramid of Khafre also looks as large or even larger than the Great Pyramid, but that is due to the fact that it was built up on a higher ridge than the Great Pyramid. The Pyramid of Khafre is about 10 feet shorter than the Great Pyramid and has a steeper angle of incline, thus giving it considerably less volume. The third large pyramid, the Pyramid of Menkaure, is noticeably smaller than the other two, standing at just over 200 feet. Ancient Egyptians were masters of architecture and geometry. The three pyramids are all nearly perfectly aligned with each face pointing in a nearly exact north, south, east, and west direction. The base of each of the pyramids also nearly form perfect squares with each side almost the exact same length and each angle nearly exactly 90 degrees. | ![]() The Great Pyramid (The Pyramid of Khufu) |
Exploring the PyramidsBe sure to try and get to the Pyramids of Giza first thing in the morning. It will help you avoid the throngs of people as well as the hottest part of the day. There is an overall entrance fee to get into the pyramid complex, as well as additional entrance fees to enter inside the Great Pyramid or the Pyramid of Menkaure if you should choose. Entering inside pyramids may not be available at all times depending on whether there are any renovation or restoration projects that may be in progress. Our Pyramids of Giza Self-Guided Tour Map contains useful information for navigating the pyramid complex and also contains tips about all the points of interest within the site. You may no longer climb the pyramids, which used to be allowed, but was a very dangerous activity. You have the option of taking a camel ride around the complex, which depending on your preferences, can be rather enjoyable. At night, try to take in the Pyramid Sound and Light Show. The times and language used during the show will vary, so be sure to check listings to see what time your language will be playing. |
