Getting to Angkor Wat

Angkor Wat is located just minutes away from the modern city of Siem Reap, Cambodia. Almost every major Asian airline flies into either one of two cities: Siem Reap or Phnom Penh. If you fly into Siem Reap, you will be only a 20 minutes bus ride from Angkor Wat, if you choose to fly into Phnom Penh, you will have to take a 5-7 hour bus ride to get to Angkor Wat. You will need to obtain a Visa to enter the country, which is easy to do since you can get one on arrival at either the Phnom Penh or Siem Reap international airports. If you are in neighboring Thailand or Vietnam, there are bus companies that run daily routes to and from Siem Reap. Due to being close to the popular tourist destination: Angkor Wat, the city of Siem Reap is a stark contrast to the rest of the country with luxury hotels, high end restaurants, and many of the amenities you would see back at home. The recommended dates of travel are between November and May. Cambodia is in a tropical climate and summer is monsoon season.

Getting from the Airport to Angkor Wat

Angkor Wat is so close to the city, that if you are approaching from the north east direction and look off the left side of the plane, you can see the ruins on your approach for landing. Most people will want to get a better view than that, so what is the best way to get to Angkor Wat? The best way to get there is by tour bus. The bus service is generally clean and reliable, and always provides AC. Another option is hiring a cab driver to take you to the site; some drivers can be hired for multiple days, but don't count on them to be your guide as most speak very little English. Also, if you are planning on only being out during daylight hours', renting a bicycle is not a bad way to go and is very common to do so in Siem Reap. Unlike the rest of Cambodia, rickshaws are hard to find here.

Other things to see and do while in Siem Reap

Boats on Tonle Sap in Cambodia
Boats on Tonle Sap Lake in Cambodia

The Angkor National Museum in Siem Reap is one of the best and most high tech museums in southeast Asia and it is definitely a must see. It has great exhibits on Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom and the Khmer Civilization. They also tout their 1000 Buddha statues.

Another famous site, but much more sobering site, is one of several Khmer Rouge killing fields that is located a short distance from Siem Reap. This is one of several locations throughout the country where Pol Pot and his henchman performed mass executions on Cambodian civilians. The genocide was one of the worst the world has seen with over 1 million Cambodians executed.

Another thing to see in Siem Reap is the massive Tonle Sap Lake. The lake is shallow, but is the largest lake by area in Southeast Asia.
