Getting to Athens, Greece

To get the Acropolis of Athens, you naturally need to find your way to Athens first. Many people visit Athens through a Mediterranean cruise and it is definitely an easy way to go. You will only get a day to explore the city and the Acropolis if you choose this route. Athens also has new, award winning, international airport that was built in 2001 when the city was preparing for the 2004 summer Olympics. It is a hub for both Olympic Air and Aegean Airlines. Most large American carriers also fly into Athens. The Line 3 Metro (blue line) connects to the airport so you can easily access most of the city and the Acropolis without the need to ever rent a car to take a taxi.

Getting to the Acropolis

The Acropolis is located on a plateau that towers over the city center of Athens and is impossible to miss. The best way to get to it is to take the Athens Line 2 Metro (red line) and get off at the 'Akropoli' station. This will drop you off at the entrance of the new museum where you can easily walk around to get to the main entrance. Since the Acropolis is also visible from almost anywhere in the city, you could simply walk to it as well. Taxi's are always plentiful in the city and is another, more expensive mode of transportation around the city. Athens has gotten much safer over the course of the last ten years and has really modernized its infrastructure since it was awarded and hosted the 2004 Summer Olympics.
