Around Athens

Athens is a city deep rooted in culture. The city is littered with archaeological sites and landmarks. The stigma that Athens had as an unsafe city is no longer true. Due to all the infrastructure improvements and modernization that occurred leading up to the 2004 Olympic Games, the city is now considered extremely safe. Taking the Metro is the best way to get around the city. There are 3 Metro Lines and you can basically access any part of the city by foot or rail. If you have come here to eat, the street food in Athens is some of the best in the world, be sure to try a Gyro. Like all big cities, there are some areas to avoid, namely in the western side of Athens and the area near Karaiskaki square.

There are several side trips you can take throughout Athens. Besides the Acropolis, be sure to check out the Ancient Agora. Here you will see one of the best preserved Greek Temples. A couple other recommended archaeological sites are the Temple of Olympian Zeus and the Roman Agora. Nearby the Temple of Olympian Zeus is Panathianiko Stadium. This was the site of the first modern day Olympic Games in 1896.

Day Trips from Athens

There are several popular day trips from Athens. The area is rich in beauty and history, so you will never be short of things to do. One must see is the archaeological site of Delphi located about 3 hours from Athens. There are several buses that leave daily from Athens from the Terminal B Bus Station. Delphi was the site of the famous Oracle of Delphi and has several amazing ruins located among a beautiful mountainous landscape.

Another popular day trip is taking a catamaran to a Greek Isle or two. A very popular day trip is going to the island of Hydra and then on to the island of Spetses in the Aegean Sea. There are several daily departures from the Athens port of Piraeus to these beautiful islands. The quickest way is taking a catamaran and it can get you to Hydra in about an hour and a half, and then on to Spetses in about thirty minutes.
